Rollie's Island Restoration
The Big Island between Upper and Middle Whitefish has a steep eroding sugar-sand bank over a 1000 feet long. When this sand falls into the water it is carried in "clouds" and covers rocky bottom areas with sand, destroying the habitat walleyes need to lay eggs. Volunteers from Rollie's Island and WAPOA (many do both) have completed the first section of the restoration. More will follow as volunteer support and funds allow. Shoreland Restoration Contest Photos WAPOA decided to have an activity to encourage interest among lakeshore owners in restoring lakeshore to a more natural state. So why not have a contest? They did, people entered. The winner received help restoring lakeshore. The other entrants benefited too with expert advice received from several collaborating agencies and organizations. WAPOA Board Meeting October 2009 This was included to show a typical Board Meeting. Meetings are monthly except for February and March. There are extra meetings if circumstances warrant. Generally the meetings are held at the Ideal Community Hall. The WAPOA Board consists of 14 directors. Further help is provided by former Board members and other interested citizens. WAPOA Annual Meeting 2009 All of the membership, and anyone else who is interested in preserving the lakes, is invited to this meeting held early in June. A free home cooked breakfast is followed by knowledgeable speakers who bring the group up-to-date on current lake issues. A business meeting follows. It is held at the Ideal Community Hall. Grandpa's Run for the Walleye 2009 Raising funds for walleye habitat, this annual run and walk, close to July 4th, is a favorite activity for families. It starts with a Sundash run for kids and is followed by the run/walk for those wishing to go a longer distance. WAPOA at the Classic Boat Show in Crosslake WAPOA has exhibits at this event which is attended by more than 5,000 people. We have knowledgeable WAPOA directors talking to passerbys about lake issues, large format lake maps showing current water quality of more than 30 lakes, information about best management practices for the shoreline and the fishery, and more. DNR Stripping Walleyes at the Mouth of the Pine River 2009 In April every year walleyes are swimming up the Pine River to lay eggs. The Minnesota DNR wants to collect eggs and sperm (milt) to use in its hatcheries, so it catches the walleyes in nets placed across the river. After the fish are squeezed to release the eggs and milt, the walleyes are released. The eggs and milt are instantly mixed and then trucked off to hatcheries. Board Meetings in April and May 2009 A Look Back at 2008 Activities Some of the people pictured are Board members who have now finished their 6 years on the Board.
