Subject: Spring Lake Carp Hello all,
The Prior Lake-Spring Lake Watershed District is in the planning stages for beginning an in-depth research program on carp dynamics on a few of the District lakes, with a priority on Spring Lake. Carp are a damaging invasive fish that contribute to higher turbidity and increased levels of phosphorus in our lakes, which Spring Lake is already impaired for. Pending the weather over the next week we are hoping to have Dr. Peter Sorensen from the University of Minnesota, a renown carp researcher (http://fwcb.cfans.umn.edu/sorensen/) out for a site visit. Dr. Sorensen has asked us to touch base with the residents, frequent fishermen and others who are familiar with Spring Lake to see if you can give insight into the carp population. We are aware of frequent carp activity on both the inlet to Spring Lake from County Ditch 13 and the outlet to Upper Prior Lake, but are you aware of any other areas of high carp activity? Have you noticed any particular patterns of their activity? Any information you have would be helpful in aiding Dr. Sorensen focus his efforts. Please pass the word along to anyone else you know who is familiar with the lake and may be of help and have them either email or call me at the District office by Friday. Thank you for your help.
