DNR Shoreline Habitat Grants

We have exciting news for all shoreland owners interested in protecting their water quality and developing habitat for wildlife! Minnesota DNR shoreland habitat grant money is being made available to Hubbard County residents this year by the Cass County ESD. Project funds can be used for re-establishing vegetation for fish and wildlife habitat, re-establishing native vegetation along shorelines, shoreline erosion control projects and developing educational materials/forums to promote shoreline restoration and native aquatic plantings. Rip Rap projects are not eligible for these grant monies. Projects will have a 50/50 funding match and in kind labor, at the rate of $ 10.00 per hour, can be used as part of the match. Approved projects will have a ten year contract which will allow the site to be viewed by the public as a demonstration site. The site must be made available to the DNR and Cass County during installation and for the ten-year contract period for promotion and evaluation. Also the project must be maintained for the ten year contract period. For those that are interested the program will go as follows:
1.) Interested residents should call Steve Hall at Shoreline Creations - 218-732-8907 (also the Boulder Lake Association COLA Rep.). Residents may also call Shane Foley at Hubbard County Soil and Water Conservation District at 218-732-0121. There will be a significant step reduction by contacting Shoreline Creations first instead of the SWCD, although you can get to the same place either way.
2.) A meeting will be set up and the site will be qualified to make sure it meets the criteria for the grant.
3.) Once the site is qualified, Shoreline Creations will prepare a proposal and submit it to Cass County ESD for approval.
4.) Upon approval by Cass County and the landowner, a contract can be submited to the DNR and once signed the work can begin.
This is an outstanding opportunity for our waterfront landowners. Once the money is gone there are no guarantees that more will be appropriated. This DNR grant is different from the grant that was sought last Fall by SWCD. SWCD did not get funded however Shane Foley will be contacting the list of the residents that expressed interest last Fall. If you have any questions, please call Steve Hall at 218-732-8907.
